From the Dean

Starting a new academic year is always an exciting time, but this fall is notable for the changes taking place at Purdue and in our college.

We welcomed France A. Córdova as Purdue’s 11th president in July. She began her presidency by meeting and greeting faculty, staff, and students on the steps of Hovde Hall. It was a perfect summer day, and the turnout was tremendous. I believe the people of Purdue are foremost in President Córdova’s mind. She has said the University’s new strategic plan will celebrate and support students, staff, faculty, and alumni. It also will examine Purdue’s relationship with the state of Indiana and be an energizer for the state’s economy.

Within CFS, we just held an energizing retreat where we discussed exciting possibilities for the college's future. During the past year, we have been working toward a new strategic plan with a focus for the next five years on purpose, people, partnerships, and possibilities. I believe our strategic plan will dovetail nicely with the University’s. People are our greatest strength, and to effect the most change in our learning, discovery, and engagement initiatives, we must partner with others who share a similar mission. Through our people and our partnerships, we will accomplish our purpose to enhance quality of life for people in Indiana and beyond. Imagine the possibilities!

Hail Purdue!

‘Fish for Your Health’ Information Card Designed for Women

Eating fish has valuable health benefits, but eating too much of certain fish can be dangerous for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who may become pregnant. Charles Santerre, a professor in the Department of Foods and Nutrition, has created a wallet-sized information card that outlines the benefits of eating fish and which fish should be avoided. Find out more about the card and how you can obtain one.

Hospitality and Tourism Management Library Works to be Digitized

Purdue’s collection of library works in hospitality and tourism will soon be available around the globe. The University has joined other Big Ten schools in an agreement with Google to scan selected library holdings into one digital repository. Books not copyrighted will be available in digital form in their entirety. For books under copyright protection, a search will result in basic background and a few lines of the text surrounding the term. Find out more about the digital library.
