From the Dean

One of the best dining experiences in Central Indiana is our very own John Purdue Room. The menu is creative, the service is exceptional, and the price is very reasonable — it’s not surprising that many customers don’t realize it’s a training lab for our Hospitality and Tourism Management students. Our chef instructors have stellar culinary and management training, which translate into unique food, wine, and beer selections.

The lunches served in the John Purdue Room have become a favorite among Purdue faculty, staff, and the community. Diners have the opportunity to experience outstanding cuisine while students gain the hands-on experience critical to their education. Students in HTM 291L develop the menu, test recipes, plan and prepare the food, and serve the meals.

In the evening, students in HTM 492 operate the John Purdue Room Bistro, which offers a casual fine dining experience. The course is an advanced simulation designed to give students a chance to practice a wide range of managerial skills associated with the duties of a hospitality operations manager. In running the Bistro, students make managerial decisions and provide leadership, training, and guidance to classmates.

If you haven’t experienced one of our lunches or the Bistro, I encourage you to stop by Stone Hall — you’ll enjoy a great meal while providing a valuable learning experience for our students.

Hail Purdue!
Dennis Savaiano
Dean

Special international lunches will be served on October 22 (Polynesian) and October 30 (Fusion). This fall, the John Purdue Room Bistro features a new menu and beers from microbrewers in Indiana. Sowing the Seeds of Healthy Eating

Third-graders across Indiana are having fun creating their own fruit and vegetable gardens — and learning a thing or two about healthy eating along the way. Twenty-two schools are participating in the Eat Your Way to Better Health program, developed by CFS Extension in partnership with the Indiana State Department of Health. Read more about the program.

Family Impact Seminar Heads to the Indiana State House

More than 500,000 Hoosier families are unable to open a checking or savings account because of previous money mismanagement. Indiana lawmakers and economists will discuss financial literacy of families at the 11th annual Family Impact Seminar on November 17 at the Indiana State House. The seminars provide research on current family issues for state legislators and their aides, governor’s office staff, state agency representatives, educators, and service providers. Visit the Center for Families Web site for more information.
