From the Dean

Many factors affect quality of life, but perhaps the most important is a person’s health and well-being. In Indiana, where the rates for obesity and smoking are among the highest in the nation, Governor Mitch Daniels’ INShape Indiana program is working to address this crisis.

In October, our college is partnering with the Indiana State Department of Health to bring the 2007 INShape Indiana Health Summit: Live Healthy, Work Healthy to Purdue University. To be held October 15, the summit targets Hoosier employers and will address the economic benefits of a healthy workforce and the choices companies can provide their employees to help them develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The annual Eva Goble Lecture Series will be held in conjunction with the summit and features Glorian Sorensen, a professor in Harvard’s School of Public Health. Dr. Sorensen is well known for designing and testing workplace interventions aimed at changing health-related behaviors and creating a healthy work environment.

Our college’s involvement in Governor Daniels’ annual Health Summit is just one example of the many ways we are partnering with like-minded organizations to achieve our mission of enhancing the quality of life in Indiana and beyond.

Hail Purdue!

Parents Should Practice Active Reading with Children

reading to child

When it comes to reading to children, the technique may be just as important as the time spent together. Jennifer Dobbs, an assistant professor in the Department of Child Development and Family Studies, suggests that parents practice dialogic reading, a more active form of reading that encourages input from the child and has been shown to accelerate children’s learning of pre-reading skills. Find out more about dialogic reading.

The site is named “Purple Wagon” and provides research-based information and activities to help children understand political violence, cope with fears, and learn how to make peace.
