From the Dean

Black and gold is everywhere at Purdue, but lately, there’s been talk of another color… green! Purdue is preparing to celebrate its first-ever Green Week on September 15–19 and “black and gold and green” are the buzzwords. As a college, we applaud this effort and look forward to doing our part to promote sustainability. We also want to encourage individual responsibility and foster new ideas for “going green” that we can all share.

During Green Week, we have several efforts planned. We will be requesting that visitors to the HTM Café use fewer napkins, take-out containers, and Styrofoam cups. We’ll be asking that employees turn off their office lights and computer monitors when away from their desks. I encourage you to visit the CFS Green Week Web site where you can read about our Green Week initiatives and “50 Ways to Go Green.”

Now we’d like to hear from you… just tell us what you are doing at work and at home to conserve our planet’s resources. Those who submit ideas by September 22 will be entered to win one of 100 reusable grocery totes that CFS is giving away. Let the black and gold and green brainstorming begin!

Hail Purdue!

Walks Across Indiana Encourage Hoosiers to Get Moving

Sponsored by CFS Extension and INShape Indiana, Walks Across Indiana will be held in several counties throughout the state in September and October. The event promotes walking as a great physical activity for people of all ages — helping to manage weight and lower risk for heart disease. See a list of counties participating in the event and dates for walks.

Darden Series Brings Industry Leaders to Campus

Hospitality and tourism executives will be coming to Purdue as part of the Darden Series: Executives in the Classroom fall speaker series. The first presentation features a visit from Ralph Brennan, president of The Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group, on Thursday, September 11 at 10:30 a.m. in the Forney Hall of Chemical Engineering, Room G140. The event is open to the campus and community. Visit the Darden Series Web site for information on other speakers in the series.

Student Council Seeking Donations for Silent Auction

The CFS Student Council is accepting donations for its annual silent auction held in the CFS tent during Homecoming. The money raised supports the Mary Louise Foster Scholarship Fund, which typically awards two $1,500 scholarships. The council is especially interested in theme baskets, Purdue items, tickets to athletic events, and vacation packages. Interested donors should contact Betsy Thompson at (765) 494-8533 or bthompso@purdue.edu.
