We’ve just finished another school year, yet the
campus soon will be teeming with students as incoming freshmen
register for classes through our Day on Campus program.
Within the college, we also are busy preparing for a new
year — and that includes new leadership in administration.
I am pleased to announce that Shelley MacDermid is the
new associate dean for discovery and learning in the College
of Consumer and Family Sciences. Chances are good that
many of you are familiar with Shelley’s work. She
is director of the Center for Families at Purdue University,
co-director of the Military Family Research Institute,
and a professor in the Department of Child Development
and Family Studies. A member of the faculty since 1989,
her research on the relationships between work conditions
and family life has earned her international recognition
and numerous awards.
Another new appointment is Rick Widdows, head and professor
in the Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing, as
the interim associate dean for diversity and international
programs for the 2006–07 academic year. During the
past year, Rick and the Department of Consumer Sciences
and Retailing have earned considerable recognition on campus
for their efforts at promoting diversity.
Please join me in welcoming Shelley and Rick to their
new roles in the college. With their leadership, we have
much to look forward to in the new academic year!
Hail Purdue!
