CFS e-News, November 2006
Dear Friends of CFS,

What a wonderful weekend for the College of Consumer and Family Sciences! Our annual Eva Goble Lecture Series on October 26 featured James Morris of the United Nations World Food Programme. Hundreds packed the faculty lounges in the Purdue Memorial Union to hear Mr. Morris speak about world hunger, its consequences, and how we all can participate in working toward a solution.

Jischke presents Pinnacle Award to Marriott

The next day, we celebrated a $4 million gift from the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation for a new building to house the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Announced during the President’s Council Annual Dinner, the contribution is the lead gift for a $12 million state-of-the-art facility worthy of our top-ranked HTM program. (Above, Purdue President Martin Jischke presents J.W. Marriott III with the Distinguished Pinnacle Award.)

Marriott Hall will be located at the northwest corner of State and University streets, just across from Matthews Hall. The facility will house a demonstration classroom, several other classrooms and labs, a career center, and a student services area. There also will be expanded space for quantity food production to service the department’s two restaurants, the HTM Café and John Purdue Room, which serve as training facilities for students as well as eating and gathering places for the campus and community.

This is an exciting time in Consumer and Family Sciences — demand for our programs continues to grow, and the generous support of our alumni, friends, and corporate partners makes it possible to provide a world class learning environment for students and research facilities for faculty.

Hail Purdue!
Dennis Savaiano

Dean

Ambassadors for Children has established a new chapter at Purdue University. Headed by faculty advisor Thelma Snuggs, assistant professor in the Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing, AFC provides meaningful travel opportunities for students and others to help children in need around the world. The group is planning trips to El Salvador, Cancun, and Belize during spring break and is collecting donations of school supplies, hygiene items, clothing, and toys. Members in the organization also volunteer in the local community. For more information, visit the Purdue chapter’s AFC Web site.
