CFS e-News, October 2006
Dear Friends of CFS,

The cooler weather of October provides a great opportunity for us to get outside for some exercise while enjoying the colorful fall foliage. Walking is an excellent activity with many health benefits and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels, alone or with a friend, or as a family activity.

As part of its Healthy People, Healthy Communities initiative, CFS Extension is partnering with the Indiana State Department of Health and INShape Indiana to promote a healthy lifestyle with Walk Across Indiana on Saturday, October 28. Many communities across the state will be hosting their own walking events that day, and I encourage you to get involved if you can. In addition, there will be a statewide walk in which participants will walk to Indianapolis from various points throughout the state. The event culminates with a celebration at White River State Park on Saturday, October 28.

Through Healthy People, Healthy Communities, CFS Extension educators throughout the state are working with local groups and coalitions to improve their community’s health. The Walk Across Indiana event is just one example of what these local partnerships can accomplish. If you’d like more information on a fitness walk in your area on October 28, please contact your local Purdue Extension office.

Hail Purdue!

Read Chef Carl's tailgate tips.

Private Giving Gets Boost from Federal Tax Law Change

A change in federal tax law offers advantages to alumni and friends considering a gift to Purdue University from a retirement account. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 allows donors to draw money from their traditional or Roth individual retirement accounts without the withdrawal being taxed as income. Visit the Office of Planned Giving Web site for details.
