April 2009

From the Dean

As members of the military return from deployment, many of them will enter college — some as first-time students and some to finish a degree interrupted by military service. But a college campus differs greatly from life in combat, and military members often feel frustrated, alone, and misunderstood when they arrive on campus.

To help ensure these student veterans get the support they need to excel in the college environment, Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded $5.8 million to Purdue’s Military Family Research Institute to launch Operation Diploma.

The initiative, which runs through summer 2012, aims to provide support for students enrolled at Purdue and other colleges and universities across Indiana. The Operation Diploma staff will assist institutions of higher education in the areas of admissions, advising, financial aid and veterans’ benefits, student services, and disability support services.

By addressing the academic, financial, physical, and emotional challenges that military members often face, Operation Diploma will help students feel welcomed and supported rather than alienated by the college experience.

Using a simulation kit, participants role-play the lives of low-income families and try to budget their resources to provide for basic necessities such as food and shelter. Students interact with mock human service agencies, grocers, pawnbrokers, bill collectors, job interviewers, police officers, and others. Read more
