February 2009
From the Dean
With the economic recession, it’s more important than ever to prepare our students to be competitive in the global marketplace. Study abroad opportunities continue to grow in the college, and students are eager to see the world — just last week more than 200 attended the CFS Study Abroad Fair to get information on our international programs.
But study abroad isn’t just for students, and this year, we opened some of our trips to alumni as well. Everyone, regardless of age and profession, can benefit from an international perspective — in some cases, it may even help you advance professionally. This year’s Felker Leadership Series “Going Global” explores international influence in our lives and how we all can pursue experiences overseas.
Our keynote speaker is C. Perry Yeatman, co-author of Get Ahead by Going Abroad: A Woman’s Guide to Fast-Track Career Success. An expert on women and international careers, she is the senior vice president of corporate affairs and global issues at Kraft Foods Inc. A world traveler, she worked abroad for 10 years, first in Singapore, then Moscow and London, before returning to the United States in 2000.
Other speakers include:
• Carolyn Curiel, chief of staff in Purdue President France A. Córdova’s office. She is a former White House speechwriter and U.S. Ambassador to Belize.
• Liping Cai, CFS associate dean for diversity and international programs. A tourism expert, he directs the Purdue Tourism and Hospitality Research Center.
• Emma Preuschl, silver medalist at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. A 2008 graduate in foods and nutrition, she has Erbs Palsy and competed on the U.S. rowing team.
I invite you to take the first step toward “going global” by attending this year’s Felker Series.
Hail Purdue!
Dean Dennis Savaiano
America Saves Week is February 22-March 1
Now in its seventh year, America Saves Week will be held February 22–March 1. The national campaign encourages Americans, especially lower-income households, to save and build wealth. To celebrate the week, CFS Extension educators will be joining with Purdue’s WorkLife Programs to provide Purdue employees with information on saving for different situations, such as buying a home or getting out of debt. If you are a Purdue employee and would like to register for one of the Purdue Saves Week presentations, visit www.purdue.edu/worklife and click “Register Now.”
MFRI offers workshop for mental health professionals
The Military Family Research Institute is partnering with the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration Division of Mental Health and Addiction to offer a workshop on February 23–24 to mental health professionals working with military families. Indiana has recently experienced the largest return of citizen soldiers not seen since World War II. Each of these service members has family members that also experience the challenges of deployment and reunion. Mental health professionals throughout Indiana will be called upon to assist these families through the transition. The workshop will cover combat specific issues, identifying and assisting with trauma and posttraumatic reactions, family reintegration, and strategies for building strong communities for military families. Space is limited and registration is required by February 16. Read more
