January 2009
From the Dean
In our home, the New Year always gets us thinking about what we would like to do differently this year and those areas of our lives we’d like to improve. The beginning of the year is a natural time to consider renewal and resolutions — and a perfect time to roll out a new Web site dedicated to improving the quality of life for Hoosier families.
As a land-grant institution, Purdue is responsible for presenting its research in a useful, informative way to the people of the state. In our college, much of the research is focused on nutrition and health, children and families, and financial literacy. These are all areas where we have an opportunity to help individuals and families with the challenges they face every day, and our new CFS Extension Web site is filling this need.
With the economy in recession, the site's home and money section should be particularly helpful. It contains information on programs and resources designed to help consumers meet day-to-day needs, achieve their long-term goals, and avoid financial fraud. There also are special sections devoted to the current economic crisis and budgeting for holiday spending.
In addition, the site includes information and resources on aging, child care, parenting, health, nutrition, and food safety. In the future, the site may be expanded to include programs that could be completed online by users. Our ultimate goal is for the people of Indiana to recognize Purdue University as the go-to place for information in consumer and family sciences. We're doing our part to make it a truly happier New Year!
Hail Purdue!

Sommelier program remembers Ray Kavanaugh
The Guild of Sommeliers Education Foundation has named its sommelier program after the late Ray Kavanaugh, who headed the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management for the past 11 years. The Guild’s sommelier program teaches students about wine production and wine service and is taught at universities across the country by Master Sommeliers. The program was named for Kavanaugh because it was his idea to bring the program to the college campus, and Purdue was the first university to offer the course. In its sixth year, the sommelier program is now taught at six colleges and has educated more than 600 students. Read more
