July 2009
From the Dean
Internships, study abroad, and summer jobs are keeping our students busy this summer. Most know these types of hands-on learning opportunities are crucial to be competitive in the job market after graduation. This summer, our students are literally all over the world.
About 40 students will participate in study abroad programs from May through July. Retail and apparel design students visited the United Kingdom to explore international influence on the retail and fashion industry. Hospitality and tourism management students visited Argentina, Chile, Korea, and Japan to study culture and tourism in those countries. Faculty in our college led all of these programs.
Out west, hospitality and tourism management seniors Josh Seidel and Caroline Wright (pictured) are working at Yellowstone National Park where they are completing internships with Xanterra Parks and Resorts. In addition to gaining experience in hotel operations, they have enjoyed many opportunities for sightseeing.
Senior dietetics student Anna Armstrong is working in her home county’s Extension office as a 4-H intern. During the Bartholomew County Fair, Anna will be responsible for organizing several of the fair’s activities including the fashion revue and 4-H camp. She’s using the internship to explore a career in Extension.
Larissa Staley, a senior in family and consumer sciences education, recently attended the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences 100th Annual Conference and Expo in Knoxville. Larissa will serve as national chair of the AAFCS Student Unit in 2009–10. Congratulations Larissa!
Working in Shanghai, China, this summer is Lele Gao, a senior in hospitality and tourism management. She is involved with the planning for World Expo 2010 to be held in Shanghai from May 1 to October 31. With more than 200 countries participating and 70 million visitors expected, Lele is interning with the Expo’s reservation service provider to find accommodations for all of the Expo’s participants.
These are just a few examples of the many wonderful and exciting things CFS students are doing this summer. If you’d like to read about some of our students’ summer experiences — like Josh’s internship at Yellowstone — I encourage you to visit our student blog.
