From the Dean

A new partnership between Abbott Nutrition and two of our student organizations is resulting in an exceptional opportunity for students to gain real-world experience and also earn scholarships. The first Abbott Nutrition Sales Competition was held on campus February 9 and challenged teams of students to create a successful sales pitch for a new Abbott Nutrition product.

Seven interdisciplinary teams, composed of 23 students from Foods and Nutrition (FN) and Consumer Sciences and Retailing (CSR), simulated an inside sales call to dietitians. Students met with Abbott representatives weeks before the competition to learn about the product and Abbott’s selling philosophy. Each team had 15 minutes to sell their product while being evaluated by a panel of judges on their opening, ability to probe the customer’s needs, use of sales materials, ability to handle objections, and closing.

Placing first, and earning $5,000 in scholarship money, are Stephanie Martinez (CSR), Laura Griggs (FN), Michelle Bojrab (FN), and Alli Parker (CSR) — pictured at right with Chris Scoggins, vice president of sales, Abbott
Nutrition. The second-place team received $3,000. They are Lauren Sramek (CSR), Sarah Bradbury (CSR), Darcy Ralls (CSR), and Antonio Lerma (CSR). Earning $1,000 is the third-place team of Sara Pierle (FN), Trent Wisehart (FN), Cassondra Desmonds (CSR), and Naomi Bee Ai Lee (CSR).

Congratulations to these students who are representing our college so well, and I want to express my deep appreciation to Abbott Nutrition for sponsoring this competition along with the Foods and Nutrition Society and Pi Sigma Epsilon. Partnerships such as these are invaluable — and go a long way toward preparing our students for success.

Hail Purdue!
