May 2009

From the Dean

On April 30, seven staff, students, and alumni from our college were honored as Purdue Heroes by the 2009 Iron Key class. They were nominated by their peers for their selflessness, persistence in overcoming adversity, achieving an ambitious goal, or positively influencing those around them. These unsung heroes are:

  • Wendi Ailor, director of alumni relations and special events
  • Hala Al-Eisa, BS ’08, master’s student at Harvard University
  • Teresa Eloff, director of undergraduate recruitment and retention
  • Jan Ogden, business assistant in Hospitality and Tourism Management
  • Erin Taylor Slater, BS ’02, CEO of College Mentors for Kids
  • Betsy Thompson, academic advisor
  • James Totton, senior in selling and sales management

This well-deserved recognition is just one of many things we have to celebrate. In April, 843 of our students were recognized at the University Honors Convocation (nearly 100 more students than in 2008) and a record number of CFS Honors students presented their Honors research projects at the annual CFS Honors Colloquium.

We also recently celebrated the successes of our alumni and students at the Alumni Awards Dinner. Five alumni including three Outstanding Young Professionals were honored, as well as an Outstanding Senior from each department. These individuals are wonderful representatives of our college, and I encourage you to visit our Web site to read more about the alumni award winners and outstanding seniors.

On May 16, nearly 400 students will graduate with a degree in Consumer and Family Sciences. These new graduates will join nearly 25,000 CFS alumni worldwide who are a vital force in the life of our college. We wish all of our graduates the best as they begin this new chapter — and we look forward to welcoming them as CFS alumni.

Hail Purdue!
Dean Dennis Savaiano
