From the Dean

The Center for Families and the Military Family Research Institute are each celebrating anniversary milestones this year. It was 15 years ago that a generous gift from Lorene Burkhart helped create the Center for Families, and just five years later that a new focus on helping military families was established at Purdue. The college will be honoring the accomplishments of these two organizations throughout the year, beginning with the annual Eva Goble Lecture Series on Thursday, November 5.

The event features Brian K. Barber, founding director of the Center for the Study of Youth and Political Violence at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. He is internationally recognized for his research of adolescent development in the context of political violence, with a particular focus on youth from Palestine and Bosnia.

Hundreds of thousands of youth worldwide are involved in political violence, either as passive witnesses, voluntary fighters, or coerced soldiers. Barber believes much can be done to better understand the youth experience in political violence and to more fully integrate efforts to assist them in leading constructive lives. I invite you to join us for this very important discussion.

Hail Purdue!
Dean Dennis Savaiano

The Eva Goble Lectures Series will be held Thursday, November 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 218. It’s free and open to the public. Registration is required by October 30. To register, send an e-mail to cfsalums@purdue.edu or call (765) 494-7890.

CFS students turn ‘green’

Carmen Martin, a junior majoring in nutrition science and dietetics, led an initiative to recycle during Purdue home football games. In seven home games in 2008, volunteers collected more than 22 tons of recyclable items that otherwise would have gone to a landfill. Carmen also is president of the Boiler Green Initiative at Purdue. More about Carmen

Courtney Heaphy, (pictured above) a senior majoring in selling and sales management, worked this past summer as a marketing and environmental policy intern for the British Retail Consortium. During her internship, she helped develop a recycling label for the 2012 Olympics. More about Courtney

New findings may lessen the need for animal testing

Photo of Mario FerruzziA study by Mario Ferruzzi, associate professor of food science and nutrition at Purdue, has shown that adding ascorbic acid and sugar to green tea can help the body absorb helpful compounds and increase the absorbability of catechins found in the tea. This finding could potentially reduce the number of animals needed for these types of studies. Read more
