launching CFS e-News, a quick and convenient way to communicate

| Vitamin
E in Plant Seeds Could Halt Prostate and Lung Cancer |
| The
form of vitamin E found in many plant seeds, but not in most
manufactured nutritional supplements, might halt the growth
of prostate and lung cancer cells, according to a Purdue study.
A team led by Qing Jiang, assistant professor of foods and
nutrition, has found that gamma-tocopherol, which occurs naturally
in walnuts, pecans, sesame seeds, and in corn and sesame oils,
inhibits the proliferation of lab-cultured human prostate and
lung cancer cells. Read

Development Institute |
Mark
and Judi Mosser Merkel, BS '68, are giving $50,000 over the
next five years to help build the Human Development Institute,
an interdisciplinary space on campus dedicated to improving
the quality of life for children, youth, families, and the
elderly. Read

| Felker
Leadership Conference |
Robert
Egger, president and founder of D.C. Central Kitchen will
be the keynote speaker at the 2005 Felker Leadership Conference
on April 15. Egger, who has been featured on Nightline, 48
Hours, and Oprah, heads the Washington D.C.-based
organization that collects unused food from local restaurants,
caterers, and hotels and produces 4,000 meals a day. Egger
also founded Campus Kitchens Project, which operates similar
programs in college cafeterias across the country. Registration

Renamed College of Consumer and Family Sciences |
| Consumer
and Family Sciences was one of several schools at Purdue
that were renamed "colleges" recently. The name change, approved
by Purdue's Board of Trustees in November, better reflects
the comprehensive, multidisciplinary range of academic programs
offered in CFS and helps the college stay competitive with
its peers. Read

Impact Seminar |
| The
2005 Family Impact Seminar "Growing Indiana's Human Capital:
Assuring Positive Futures for Youth" will be held January
12 in Indianapolis. The annual seminar strives to inform
legislators about the latest research concerning youth and
families, and the challenges and opportunities to be considered
as they make policies that affect youth. The Family Impact
Seminar is sponsored by the Consortium of Family Organizations,
of which CFS Extension and Purdue's Center for Families are

Alumna Receives Hovde Award for Service to Hoosier Citizens |
| Judi
Merkel, BS '68, was honored for her efforts to improve the
health and well-being of residents of Wells County and surrounding
areas. Merkel, a consumer and family sciences Extension educator,
received the Frederick L. Hovde Award for Excellence in Educational
Service to the Rural People of Indiana. Read

Faculty |
|
Shawn Whiteman, assistant professor, Department of Child
Development and Family Studies, joins the Purdue faculty
this month. He earned his PhD from The Pennsylvania State
University in 2004.

and Honors |
|
Sugato
Chakravarty, professor, Department of Consumer Sciences
and Retailing, and his colleagues Petko Kalev and Linh Pham
had their paper "Stealth Trading in Volatile Markets" selected
as winner of the best paper for the Barclays Global Investors
Research Award.
Sharon
DeVaney, professor, Department of Consumer Sciences
and Retailing, is being honored with a Service to Education
Award from South Dakota State University. DeVaney earned
her bachelor's degree from SDSU in 1961 and was the top-ranked
student in the Home Economics Division.
Jane
Matranga, clinical assistant professor, Department
of Consumer Sciences and Retailing, was inducted into Alpha
Lambda Sigma Phi Eta Honorary.
Rick
Widdows, professor and head, Department of Consumer
Sciences and Retailing, has been elected to a three-year
term on the Board of the American Council on Consumer Interest.
